Jobs January 30, 2007

So, my debate lately has been, do I stay with Security or jaunt back over to Unix work? I’m in the middle of an Internet Security System class and it’s really opening my eyes to the power of their Intrusion Detection products. So, with this new-found understanding, I like Security. But, having been in Unix for nearly 10 years, is it worth throwing all that away to move in a new direction? I’m fairly sure I don’t want to move back to daily administration work. I’ve had enough of daemons, shell scripts and patching. I would be interested in managing a team of Unix admins, doing enterprise planning and architecture work or something along those lines.

I’m not sure… I guess the next few months will move me along a path.

Weekend Musings January 22, 2007

So, it was a fun-filled weekend. Thought I’d share with my hordes of admiring fans. My parents and sister braved the weather woes to travel to Illinois for my daughter’s birthday. Caitlin is four now (unbelievable) and we had a nice party for her. It was mostly cousins and a few friends that showed up and it was a good time. I kept my tradition of bringing some “strange” brews (strange to the Miller Lite crowd) for people to enjoy and my wife cooked up about 3 gallons of chili. It was excellent.

Sunday was a day of football. I can’t even believe that the Bears have made it back to the Superbowl after 21 years. I was never much of an NFL fan growing up in Nebraska. We were really only exposed to Nebraska football. But since I’ve been in Chicago I’ve come to be a Bears fan. I arrived towards the end of the Ditka era, survived the Wannstedt and Jauron days and have enjoyed watching them rise with Urlacher and Brown (ex-NU dontchaknow) with Lovey at the Helm. This town loves to keep talking about the 85 Bears. Granted, they were a good team but stfu already. Maybe the Bears will win and everyone will just shut up about 1985. I mean, it was 21 years ago. Well, the Blackhawks have been in the dumper longer but that’s for another topic…

One More Today… January 15, 2007

I have a life. No, really I do. In any case, just more playing around with Live Writer. I figured I’d drop a pic in my text just to see what happens. Well, if you are still reading, this is what happened.

It goofs up the links around it, which isn’t good and I can’t figure out how to make a margin around the pic so text butts up against the photo. Annoying.

Live Writer

I’m no huge fan of Microsoft, since I’m a Unix guy and all but the Live Writer package was recommended to me by the guy that runs this blogging server. I thought I’d give it a try. So far, it seems to work pretty well and be fairly painless in terms of configuration. A couple of settings and it does the rest. I must admit, I love tweaking but sometimes having the simple stuff “just work” is nice. You can get the software here.

New Blog

Well, I finally broke down to add a blog to my website. I really have never posted anything on a website before as my life has been seemingly uninteresting. But I guess that’s what makes the blog world interesting… no life is required! I thought it may be a good time to start documenting the happenings with the family and some other projects I’ve got going. Plus, after opening a flickr account, its a good way to document and share my mass of photos I have archived on my PC.

Enjoy!
